HAYLEY'S EMAIL:

In our area we have a fairly successful high school girl's
volleyball team.  They win a lot of matches but just can't seem to
get over the hump to win a championship.  Maybe its skill they are
lacking?  Perhaps a few more drills might do the trick?  Could it
be something else?

They have a reputation for being unkind, selfish and rude to other
students and teachers and those who don't play volleyball.  They
are how shall we say this nicely....stuck-up.  Here's something to
think about - your team's reputation reflects on you as their coach.

That kind of character needs to be blocked.  So, just like
designing a play to block an opponent's kill shot you need to
design an effective block to keep that kind of character out of
your court.

We all like to play the blame game.  But more often than not our
team might have picked up some character flaws in us.  So the first
part of this blocking scheme is to check yourself.  How are you
treating others?  How are you carrying yourself?  How are you
treating other coaches?  Other players?

Now, if you're anything like me.  You might not be able to identify
anything, so ask someone else that you know and trust.

We often can't see the problem because we are too close to the
problem.  We live with it.  This kind of drill requires humility
and will demonstrate to others your willingness to grow and learn.

Ask an assistant or a close friend.  I have found that opening
myself up for this through the question I will share with you,
opens the door for revealed character to get developed.

Make sure that before you ask this question you're ready to live
into the commitment you are about to make.  Ready for the question?

Well, next time...no just kidding here it is.  Go to the trusted
person and ask, "If you knew I wouldn't get mad or defensive and
just listen, is their anything you would tell me that I need to
grow in?"

This kind of modeling helps you grow and shows others a humble
spirit committed to being the best person you can be.

As you deal with yourself another part of this blocking scheme is
to allow for 6 month evaluations from players, assistants, parents,
your athletic director and if you're daring other coaches and
referees.

Design a short evaluation around the character you want to develop
in yourself and your players - honesty, commitment, dedication,
enjoyment, integrity, sportsmanship, selflessness, teamwork and I'm
sure there are others you could add.  Why do this?  Because as the
coach goes...so goes the team.

Next time we'll look at the rest of the blocking scheme that deals
with your team.  With these first two components of this blocking
scheme taken, you're ready to go up for the block that will "house"
bad character.

Warmly
Hayley
